The Politics of Metaphor in Botswana HIV/AIDS Posters

Abstract

Between politics and truth metaphor stands. Metaphor may stand as a vehicle of communication between the leaders and their people, between the present and the future, and between the real and the imaginary. It can stand as a transparent image, and as a sign that gives the people power to make judgment. In most of the Botswana posters on HIV/AIDS, it can be observed that the approach has been one of transparency, where dignitaries and those well known to the old and the youth stand as gates to truth. In the HIV/AIDS pandemic, however, truth hangs between change of behavior and death.
