Strategies to enhance the information seeking behaviour of artisans in Nsukka metroplis of Enugu state, Nigeria.

Abstract

The paper examines the strategies to enhance the information seeking behaviour of Artisans in Nsukka Metropolis of Enugu State, Nigeria. The study was guided by three specific objectives and descriptive survey design was used for the study. The population of the study consider of two thousand, two hundred and eighty registered male and female artisans in Nsukka metropolis with a sample made up of two hundred and twenty eight arti sans from eighteen vocations. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire and mean was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that artisans do have various information needs an d the areas of their information needs inclu de occupation, education, finance, and skill acquisition. It was revealed that the extent to which their information is met is low. The strategies that could be used to meet their information seeking behaviour include disseminating information through sele ctive dissemination of information, creating awareness campaign and financial support from government. It was recommended that government should provide continuing education programs for artisans in their various vocations to enable them to perform their duties more effectively; there is need to establish information centre with internet access in the metropolis to meet the basic job related information needs of artisans and public libraries should be proactively involved in the provision of information to artisans.
