A study on the availability, knowledge and use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) by Library and information science lecturers in Imo State

Abstract

This work studied the availability, knowledge and use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) by Library and Information Science (LIS) lecturers in Imo State, with particular reference to Imo State University (IMSU) and Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri FPNO. The survey method was adopted in this research which involved the use of questionnaire. The population of the study is 22, made up of the Library and Information Science lecturers of (IMSU) and (FPNO). Total enumeration was used for the sample size. Out of a total of 22 copies of questionnaire administered, 7 copies from IMSU and 11 from FPNO totaling 18 copies were filled and returned; giving a return rate of 82%. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The findings revealed among other things that ICT facilities are available in the ICT units of the institutions LIS departments but in spite of that, most of the facilities and ICT packages are either not put to use or are not adequately used due to insufficient knowledge of the use. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to enhance ICT knowledge and competence by the lecturers.
