Provision of ICT services and user satisfaction in public libraries in south-east and south-south zones of Nigeria

Abstract

This study x-rayed the provision of ICT services and user satisfaction in public  libraries in south-east and south-south zones of Nigeria. The study adopted both survey and correlation research designs. The target population of this study  consists of 501 library staff. The research study covered both south-east and  south-south geo-political zones of Nigeria. The enumerative sampling technique was used to select the entire life. The study revealed that the ICT-based services  provided are: bar coded circulation services; bibliographic database services;  electronic-mail services; online selective dissemination of information resources; e-library services; and full text journal articles. Users are not satisfied with the available ICT-based services provided in the public libraries. the relationship  between the levels of provision of ICT services and users‟ satisfaction in public  libraries is very high and significant. provision of ICT-based services such as:  Internet web browsing services, online current awareness services (OCAS),  CD-ROM services, document scanning services, virtual users, automated library services, digital reprographic services, and online inter-library loan services to the library users were recommended, so that they will not go elsewhere to look for the information that would have been provided by the public libraries. Stakeholders should make every effort to provide adequate ICT services to ensure users‟  satisfaction. The originality of this paper is that it has provided empirical evidence on the provision of ICT services and user satisfaction in public libraries in  south-east and south-south zones Nigeria.
