Creation and use of knowledge management in academic libraries: Usmanu Danfodiyo University library experience

Abstract

Knowledge management in any organization is one of the important topics today in both the industrial and information research world. Huge amount of data and information are being processed and needed to continuously be updated, its knowledge and renew work and skills needed in order to enable library professionals to compete effectively in any challenging society. Data and information are not knowledge until we know how to dig the value out of it. This is the reasons we need knowledge management. It promises much, but often delivers little. There are no simple solutions to the challenge of  knowledge management in Usmanu Danfodiyo University library. This paper examined and identifies knowledge management creation strategy, channels of knowledge sharing and its usage. It also highlighted knowledge management creation, use and challenges in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Library. It concluded and recommended that existing information technological infrastructure should be upgraded, including organization‟s  intranet and extranet to facilitate the capturing, organizing, storage and sharing of both explicit and tacit knowledge for the overall progress and development of academic  libraries as well as its impact on librarians as knowledge managers.
