The Internet: A New Opportunity for Librarians and Information Specialists in Nigerian

Abstract

The information super highway, the Internet has come to stay. This paper x-rays the wonderful opportunity, which the Internet has brought to bear on the librarian/information specialist in providing library and information services to clients. The paper establishes that the Internet came into being in the 1960s by the US Department of Defense. The Internet provides “promotional information” which entails that the library is still very important in the life of the people. To succeed with the challenges posed by the Internet, the librarian/information specialist should develop operational result- oriented Internet strategy. The Internet literate and aided librarian/Information specialist should really prove that he is the expert by sharing his knowledge and skills with both his colleagues and clients. The information specialist should regularly hold lectures, seminars, symposia and demonstrations with all concerned. Above all, he should be proactive, forward looking, and exposed to continuous learning because Internet is constantly changing the fact of information provisioning from the quest for quick reference questions to research questions.
