Assessment of Software Usage in Nigerian Agricultural Research Libraries

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess softwares used in automating the services of some selected agricultural libraries in Nigeria with the aim of determining their suitability for effective network. The descriptive research survey method using questionnaire was used in collecting data. Twelve (12) libraries of Agricultural Research Institute, representing 68% were randomly s elected from eighteen (18) libraries. Copies of the questionnaire were administered to the head librarians of the twelve libraries. 7 copies of the questionnaires forming 58% w ere returned. Findings revealed that majority of responding libraries face different challenges in selecting, appropriate application software for automation. Out of the software used, Micro C DS/ISIS rank highest. In conclusion, it could be said that Agri cultural Research Institute libraries were established according to specialized subject background like fisheries, crop production, animal production, processing of agricultural products etc. Recommendations were made as to the need for the identification and acquisition of open source/collaborative unifying software that would enable libraries with related mandate collaborate and share resources.
