Abstract

This study investigated on the perceived influence of industrial action by university employees on academic achievement of undergraduates in Makurdi metropolis. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted for this study and the researcher used 300 participants who were drawn from the three universities in Makurdi metropolis (209 69.7% males and 86 28.7% females). The age range was 17 - 43 years with mean age of 23.18 (SD = 3.75). The reliability coefficient of the perceived influence of strike  questionnaire used in the study was .81 Cronbach’s Alpha. Also, an Academic Achievement Scale developed by Elliot and McGregor, (2001) which was revised and used by B. J. Miller (2006) with the reliability of .92 was used and the two tests were combined in one questionnaire for the study. Findings from the hypotheses indicated that, students’ perceive strike as having negative influence on their academic achievement. Also, those who were old perceived strike as having negative influence on academic achievement than those who were young. On the other hand, there was no significant sex difference in the perception of strike as having negative influence on academic achievement. The findings were discussed in line with other related works and it was recommended among others that measures should be put on ground by government and university employees to curb incessant ind ustrial action in the educational system in Nigeria since it is perceived as having negative influence on academic achievement of undergraduates.
