Personality Characteristics and Attitudes towards Alcohol Use among Students in Tertiary Institutions Delta and Edo States of Nigeria

Abstract

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Attitude towards Alcohol use Questionnaire were the major instruments used to measure the relationship between the participants' personality variables and alcohol use attitude among 238 female and male students of tertiary institutions in Delta and Edo States. Results, using the Statistics Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 9, of Pearson Product. Moment correlation confirmed that, Extraversion and Lie traits relates with alcohol use attitudes. There is no significant relationship between Psychoticism and Neuroticism traits with alcohol use attitudes. Conclusively, Extravertedness and lying are predisposing conditions of alcohol use attitudes. Alcohol use attitudes have educational, medical and policy implications in our ivory towers and society. Therefore it was recommended that alcohol sales, promotion and consumption on ‘campuses be banned.
