Abstract

Over the years a lot has been written on trade unions and their activities, their prospects and performances their successes and failures among others. Also internal conflict has been identified as one of the attendant problems inhibiting the success of trade unionism in Nigeria. However, most authors have approached this problem by analyzing only the endogenous factors affecting conflicts in trade unions, thus neglecting the influence of exogenous factors. This paper focuses on one of these exogenous factors; namely government policies and practices as it affect union internal conflict. The paper attempted to compare the strategies used by the military government with that of Civilian government to distabilise union internal cohesion.

The use of questionnaires and indepth interview methods were employed in gathering the data while the data were analysed by the use of frequency tables, percentages and logistic regression. The study revealed that of all the methods used by the government to distabilise union internal cohesion, the use of the police (as a form of repression) became more important than the others for the military government while the use of bribe was found more important for the civilian government in Nigeria
