Abstract

English Title: Effect of organic amendments on paddy rice (Oryza sativa L) tolerance to salinity in the south-Sudanian zone in Senegal

In southern Senegal, rice production, which is mainly rain-fed, decreased considerably due to the increase in salinity. To cope with pedoclimatic problems and increase the productivity of rice, this work which had for objective to test the effect of organic amendments (biochar and compost) on the tolerance of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L) to salinity has been carried out. A split plot design was set up in two paddy field sites: salty and non-salty in southern Senegal. Within each site, a randomized design with 2 factors was installed: organic amendment (biochar, compost, and control) and rice varieties (War1, War77 and Rock5). There was a significant increase in pH at 15 days after amendment in horizons 10-30 cm in both salty and non-salty areas (P < 0.05). No significant difference was found between the two sites for plant height, 1000 grain weight, and grain yield (P > 0.05) with or without amendment. In the salty area, there was an increase in the number of tillers and the diameter of the plants for varieties War1 and War77. Aboveground biomass for War77 and Rock5 also increased following organic amendments. Organic amendments could be used in salty paddy fields to improve rice tolerance to salinity and increase yield.
