Abstract

English title: Characterization of the zootechnical performance of wild (Sirba) and domesticated (Bouaké) strains of Oreochromis niloticus (Linné, 1758)  in Burkina Faso

The zootechnical performance of Oreochromis niloticus strains is a determining factor in their successful rearing. This study aimed at characterizing the  performance of the Bouaké (introduced) and Sirba (local) strains in Burkina Faso. Larval production and broodstock survival were evaluated for 5 months  in 3 happas each containing 9 females (129.28 g ± 18.32). The growth and survival performances of all-male juveniles (24.81 g ± 3.27) was determined  during 6 months in 3 happas of 50 juveniles each. Survival rates were 100% for broodstock of both strains as well as for Bouaké juveniles and 96.00% ±  2.00 for Sirba juveniles. The average biweekly larval production per happa was 933 ± 1130 in the Bouaké strain and 1129 ± 1223 in the Sirba strain. Daily  weight gains of all-male juveniles were 2.05 g/d ± 0.02 in the Bouaké strain and 1.11 g/d ± 0.07 in the Sirba strain. These results show that the  reproductive performance of the two strains does not differ significantly. However, the growth potential of the Sirba strain could be further improved  after genetic selection.
