Abstract

English title: Analysis of the soumbala value chain and the state of the Parkia biglobosa (Jacq.) G. Don populations in the South Sudanian zone of  Burkina Faso: the case of the Houet province

The study analyses the value chain (VC) of soumbala and the status of Parkia biglobosa populations in the Houet province. Surveys were conducted among  150 VC actors to assess their income. Dendrometric measurements were carried out on P. biglobosa to assess its population structure in two land- use patterns (savannah and agrosystems). Proportions of survey responses and population structure parameters for P. biglobosa were calculated.   Statistical tests were then carried out between the benefits gained by the VC stakeholders and also between the dendrometric parameters of the species in savannah and agrosystems using R and Minitab 14  software. These analyses reveal that Soumbala VC is profitable. However, the population structures of the species are bell-shaped, indicating a low  regeneration potential. Measures must therefore be taken to ensure regeneration in order to avoid compromising the sustainable use of the species and  consequently the CV of soumbala.
