Phenolic profile and free radical scavenger activity of two M'Manh-Alla balms formulated with Carapa procera, Cera alba and Cananga odorata from Northern Cote d’Ivoire (Korhogo)
Abstract
This study focused on the phenolic profile and free radical scavenger activity of two M'Manh- Alla balms for therapeutic purposes (M1 and M2), formulated with Carapa procera, Cananga odorata as well as beeswax (Cera alba); all these components are derived from Korhogo flora (Northern Côte d’Ivoire). The identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were analyzed by HPLC. As for polyphenols, tannins and flavonoids, their quantification was carried out by the colorimetric method using spectrophotometer. The DPPH method was used to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity of the M'Manh-Alla. balms. Phytochemical analysis led to the detection of twelve major phenolic compounds, dominated by caffeic acid (2410.46 µg/mL in balm M1 and 2513.01 µg/mL in balm M2) and quercetin, with respective contents of 362.26 µg/mL and 332.28 µg/mL in balms M1 and M2. Both balms M1 and M2 revealed levels high of total polyphenols, suggesting strong antioxidant potential. The DPPH test confirmed this property, with a more pronounced activity for the M2 balm (91.94%) by compared to M1 (44.49%). These results indicate that both balms possess excellent phytochemical profile and good free radical scavenger activity, this could justify their possible application for therapeutic purposes as improved traditional medicines.
