Abstract

The effects of garlic extract on the post harvest rot pathogens of Yam and Sweet Potatoes were investigated. Rhizopus stolonifer, Botryodiplodia theobromae Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus were found to be the cause of rot in yam and sweet potato. Both hot ethanol and mechanically extracted pathogens progressively inhibited their radial growth. At 20% concentration, there was no growth of Botryodiplodia theobromae and 62.9% and 68.8% inhibition of growth of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. The radial growth of Rhizopus stolonifer was not affected at this concentration, but at 50% concentration, there was no growth of any of the fungi.
