Incidence of malaria among students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria

Abstract

This project was carried out at Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria (FUTO). Secondary data obtained from the medical, pharmacy and laboratory units FUTO Medical Center were analyzed to determine prevalence of malaria among students of the institution between 1998 and 2004). It was found that there was yearly increasing of occurrence rate of malaria cases among the subjects (578, 581, 695, 953, 1249, 1184 and 1256 for the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 respectively). In all the years, male cases were consistently higher than female cases. The result also showed that there was usually higher number of cases of malaria during the rainy season than the dry season. Information derived from this study could be used for effective malaria control programs in the institution
