Iodometric determination of ampicillin in proprietary capsules

Abstract

The concentration of ampicillin in ampicillin capsule preparations purchased in Owerri main market, Imo State of Nigeria, was determined using the  iodometric titration method. The results showed that the ampicillin  concentrations in the capsules contained between 250 and 260 mg/cap of ampicillin trihydrate. Statistical analysis showed a mean of 255 mg/cap with a standard deviation of ±3.17. The ampicillin capsules studied satisfied the minimum pharmacopoeia requirements.
