The German contribution to South African librarianship

Thomas van der Walt

Abstract

This article deals with the contribution of the German community in the Cape to the development of librarianship in South Africa during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The influence and important role of certain German nationals have their origins before the onset of the nineteenth century when they had already established noteworthy private book collections in the Cape. It can be stated emphatically that the German contribution to the initial and continuous development of librarianship and library science in South Africa should not be underestimated.
