The Hefer Commission: its significance for the South African national information system

Christopher Merrett

Abstract

The Hefer Commission sat in late 2003 to look into allegations that the then South African Director of Public Prosecutions had been a spy for the apartheid government. These claims were widely seen as the product of internal power struggles within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and this article looks at the role of the media and archival material in the context of the work of the Commission. It examines the damage done to the South African press by the failure of some journalists to fulfill their professional obligations; and concludes with thoughts on the value of archival material and the specific responsibility of the ANC.
