Information literacy for law students: an approach to meeting the challenges of professional training and practice

R Kuhn

Abstract

Learners face particular challenges in the higher education environment
which has a unique flavour and impact on education for lifelong learning. The
South African higher education landscape has changed profoundly since 1994
as has the nature of the study of law. These changes and challenges provide
opportunities and obstacles for the development of formal information literacy
programmes particularly in terms of practical implementation, nature and
scope. In an attempt to accommodate some of these challenges a particular
approach to the design of an information literacy module for undergraduate
law students was developed. This particular programme met with a positive
response from students and reflected the flexibility with which information
literacy programmes can be designed and implemented in order to respond to changing circumstances.
