Study of information needs of juveniles in Asero remand home, Abeokuta, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examines the information needs of juveniles in Asero remand home, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data for the study. Interviews were also conducted with the staff of the home to supplement the data. Of the respondents 100% revealed that their major information need was information about their families. Other information needs of the juveniles include health information, futuristic information, adjustment information, educational information and environmental information. Of the respondents 88.3% source their information needs from the social groups which visit the home while only 11.8% source their information needs from newspapers. The study also reveals that information obtained by the juveniles usually enlightens them but is not specific enough to meet their needs.
