Promoting equitable access to school libraries in Kwazulu-Natal: the role of the Education Library Information and Technology Services (ELITS)

Khanyi Dubazana, Ruth Hoskins

Abstract

School libraries are a vital part of the education system. This article highlights the contribution made by the Education Library Information and Technology Services (ELITS) directorate of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, to the development and resourcing of school libraries in public schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The vision and mandate of ELITS has been realised through its various policy initiatives and programmes. However, like many Department of Education directorates, ELITS has encountered a number of challenges in delivering its mandate. These challenges are discussed together with the strategies that have been employed to overcome them.
