Notes and Gleanings: Tra letteratura e cronaca: Percezione dell’Africa nell’immaginario italiano

VA Mmaka

Abstract

In a world obsessed with national boundaries and belonging, the idea that
identity is an entity anchored to its stillness, facilitates the increasing of
stereotypes not last the ones about Africa and Africans. We should start
thinking at identity as a process of transformation. In our multicultural societies the multiple becomes the perfect “place” where literature and media could possibly meet and produce new stories, new worlds, new ways of dialogue. Writer Alice Walker once said that awareness is the key which can “save us” from prejudices, so what a powerful way to raise awareness through stories! What a great opportunity to think at creativity as a metaphysical place where identity develops and responsibility starts! We should embrace the idea that identity is a connection of roads, started long before us. A connection which is still changing its pattern and where we can relate with different people, meet and mystically think that our walking along them is just incidental.
