Abstract

English Abstract

Objective: To test the effectiveness of CRESTARND protocol among local cows in Burkina Faso. In particular, the aim is to determine the rate of heat synchronization and gestation for artificial insemination (A.I) in the Cascade Region and to analyze influencing factors in order to propose solutions for the improvement of AI.

Methodology and Results: A total of 641 cows of Zebu Peul, N'Dama and Goudali were selected of which 617 were synchronized with CRESTARND and 605 were inseminated. The descriptive analysis of the data was made using the R-3.2.0 software and Chi 2 test of Pearson was used for the analysis of variances at the 5% threshold. Pregnancy rate 60 days after insemination was 48.88%. This rate varied significantly with improved body condition of cows, handling and the health of the uterus at the time of insemination; follow instructions relating to insemination by breeders and the technicality of the inseminator.

Conclusion and implementation of the results: The CRESTARND protocol was effective for the breeders in the Cascades Region in Burkina Faso, with heat synchronization and conception rate to insemination encouraging in terms of its different influence factors analyzed. A support in infrastructure adapted to artificial insemination, training breeders in monitoring cows (health, food and returns to heat after calving) and recycling of inseminators will improve the efficiency of this protocol breeder.
