Abstract

English title: Avifauna of Buyo Lake (Taï National Park, South-West Côte d’Ivoire)

Objectives: In order to determine the specific composition of the avifauna of Buyo Lake in its part integrated into the Taï National Park, an ornithological inventory was carried out from February 2018 to January 2020.

Methodology and results: The main method used was an itinerant journey by motorized boat at a slow and constant speed of the water, punctuated by short stops for bird identification and counting. It allowed the inventory of 143 species of birds distributed in 18 orders and 48 families. Sixty-four species are newly mentioned in the Taï National Park. Settlement is dominated by resident species (64.74%), wetland species (31.47%) and open land species (30.07%).

Conclusion and application: This first ornithological study on Buyo Lake in the north of the Taï National Park (TNP) brings new knowledge on the avifauna of this World Heritage site. It shows the complementary nature of the avifauna of the site and that of the rest of the Park. This study initiates the consideration of this avifauna in the management of the site in particular and TNP in general. It could also make it possible to measure the impact of protection measures on the aquatic avifauna through a comparative study of the avifauna of the site and that of the unprotected part of Buyo Lake.
