Chronicle of the philosophies of Nigeria’s institutions housing music programmes, 1900-2018: Interrogating the validity of documentation

Yemi Andrew Akperi

Abstract

There is no repository of all the philosophies of music programmes in Nigeria; instead each educational institution and commission has their philosophies in handbooks. This absence is a challenge to scholars and education stakeholders. Through qualitative (historical) research method, this paper chronicles and interrogates the various philosophies that undergird Nigeria’s music programmes, enunciating their similarities, differences, relevance and contemporariness. The paper provides a template for formulating philosophies of music programmes and recommends that the Association of Nigerian Musicologists (ANIM) should be involved in archiving Nigeria’s music programmes.
