Abstract

Keyboard instruments are the most used for the accompaniment of vocal music in Nigeria. They are used in and out of Churches to provide accompaniment for art, gospel and other contemporary forms of music. But despite their widespread importance, many players of the instruments seem to lack the artistic wherewithal and technical ability to provide quality accompaniment to the ensembles or soloists who desire their services. The paper, which is largely descriptive and utilizes the observation method in data gathering, is a response towards curbing the rising trend of providing poor accompaniment on the keyboard. It was found that poor keyboard education and misapplication of playing techniques are partly responsible. Tips that will improve the budding keyboardist and expedite the attainment of his quest for excellence are provided in the work. Although the discourse is largely with reference to art music accompaniment, keyboard players who practice other styles will also find the paper useful.
