Diel Rhythm of Plankton and Physicochemical Parameters in Kangimi, Reservoir Kaduna State Nigeria

Abstract

Diurnal fluctuations of physicochemical parameters and planktonic organism were studies during the cold dry (harmattan), hot and rainy season in Kangimi reservoir. Significant diel changes were observed for all physicochemical parameters in all the months of study except for electrical conductivity that showed narrow diel variations. Significant phytoplankton diel fluctuations were also observed with peaks during the daylight hours and minimum values at night. Zooplankton diel fluctuations showed an inverse trend. The diel movements of these plankton organisms were related to the diurnal variations of the factor. The biological significance of these are discussed.
