Community Knowledge, Altitudes, and Practices Regarding Sandfly Control in Abba Nwangele, Imo State Nigeria

Abstract

The objective of this paper was to assess the Community Knowledge, Altitude, and Practices Regarding Sandfly Control in Abba Nwangele, Imo State Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. Results obtained showed that majority of the participants were male (56.0%) while the female participant were (44.0%). The results further showed that the participants between the age 4150 were higher in number (26.18%) compared to the other age groups. Out of 275 participants in the studied areas, 70(25.45) ascertained that poor sanitation is the major cause of sandflies bites while 69(25.09) attributed the cause of sandflies bites to lack of using insect repellent. 65(23.64) believes that sandflies bites are caused by staying and playing with sand, 33(12.00) claimed that the bites are caused by improper covering of body with cloth. 61(22.18%) were of the opinion that those who avoided playing with sand were the most reported preventive measures, On the other hand 54(19.64%) believe that using protective clothing prevents the bites of sandflies. About 49(17.82%) believed that avoiding staying outdoors and sacrifice to appease the gods 43(15.64%) prevents the bites while 39(14.18%) resort to the believe that good sanitation is a good preventive measure
