Strategic Potential of Agricultural Development of a Tertiary Institution Situated in the Wetland Ecosystems of the Niger Delta at Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract

Wetland ecosystems, often perceived as constraints to agricultural development, offer unique opportunities for climate-resilient and water-integrated production systems. Hence, the objective of this paper was to evaluate the strategic potential of an agricultural potential of a tertiary institution situated in the Wetland ecosystems of the Niger Delta at Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria. Using various standard methods, the study identifies critical gaps in institutional alignment, infrastructure, and land-use efficiency. Results indicate a significant mix match between existing practices and emerging priorities such as climate-smart agriculture and the blue economy. A repositioning framework is proposed, emphasizing wetland specialization, GIS-based land zoning, infrastructure modernization, and governance reform. The study concludes that targeted investments and strategic leadership can transform the faculty into a regional centre of excellence in wetland agriculture and environmental sustainability.
