Pozzolanic properties of clays used for shelter construction in Ghana

E Atiemo

Abstract

Pozzolanas produced from clay and bauxite wastes have been blended with Portland cement to produce Portland-Pozzolana composite cement. The production processes, including nodulization, are discussed. The mechanical properties of the composite cement, such as compressive strength and setting times, were determin-ed at different pozzolana contents in the range of 20 - 40 %. To achieve optimum cementing properties, a repla-cement in the range of 25 - 30 % satisfied the standard requirements for housing construction. A prototype building constructed with pozzolana cement has been exhibited.
