Abstract

This paper is on integrating technology and tradition: the role of digital libraries in Igbo Apprenticeship System (IAS) in Nigeria. The paper examines how digital libraries can be harnessed to support the Igbo Apprenticeship System and ensure its sustainability in the face of rapid technological advancements. The Igbo Apprenticeship System (IAS), a traditional model of skill acquisition and entrepreneurship
in Southeastern Nigeria, has significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of the Igbo community. However, as the global economy evolves, there is a pressing need for this indigenous system to adapt to modern technological advancements. This paper explores the role of digital libraries in integrating tradition with technology within the Igbo Apprenticeship System. By providing accessible resources and knowledge, digital libraries can enhance apprentices' training by offering materials on business management, digital marketing, and financial literacy. Furthermore, they can serve as a repository for preserving indigenous knowledge and practices, ensuring that essential skills and cultural heritage are documented for future generations. Drawing on relevant literatures, this paper explores the potential roles of digital libraries in addressing existing challenges within the Igbo Apprenticeship System while ensuring that this indigenous knowledge is preserved and modernized for future generations. Ultimately, the paper argues that the successful integration of digital libraries into the Igbo Apprenticeship System can create a sustainable model that respects traditional practices while embracing the opportunities presented by the digital age.
