Buruli Ulcer

Wilson IB Onuigbo

Abstract

Aim: To study the clinico-pathological parameters of Buruli ulcer in Ibos.

Method: A 30-year retrospective study was carried out as regards surgical specimens of Buruli ulcer received by the author on a referral basis.

Results: During 1970-2000, 43 Ibos were found to have Buruli ulcer. The lesion occurred in all age groups but predominated below 21 years and among females. Although all parts of the body were affected, there was preponderance of lesions on the lower extremities. Whereas single patients were treated in 3 towns, the capital city of Enugu was the source of 33 cases. Surprisingly, the remaining 7 cases were sent from the rural town of Afikpo.

Conclusions: Therefore, this town is probably situated in an endemic zone which requires epidemiological research. Moreover, since infection in this country has led to the appearance of the disease in other parts of the world, patients who have travelled to Nigeria need to mention it to their doctors when they present with skin lesions. In this way, early excision treatment will prevent the full development of the hideous ulcers hitherto associated with this infestation.
