Application of reality therapy on violent beliefs of Nigerian adolescents in secondary schools: a counselling approach

AC Ukwueze

Abstract

The application of Reality Therapy on students' violent beliefs was investigated through quasi-experimental research design with a sample of 18 students (13 boys and 5 girls) and another set of 18 students (15 boys and 3 girls) for experimental and control groups respectively. The students in experimental group were those punished for various violent offences. They received treatment for nine weeks. The Realistic Behaviour Index (RBI) measured violent beliefs. Results revealed a significant improvement on students' violent beliefs. It was also revealed that the therapy was gender-friendly. Based on the findings, counsellors should often apply the principles of Reality Therapy while handling students with both feelings and thoughts of violence.
