A comparison of private and public secondary school biology teachers' external motivation and job satisfaction

Abstract

This paper compares external motivation and job satisfaction in private and public secondary schools biology teachers in Education District IV of Lagos state. The sample for the study consists of 120 Biology teachers selected from ten private and ten public secondary schools. A 20-items Likert type questionnaire was administered to the selected teachers. There were no significant differences in the external motivation and also in the job satisfaction of biology teachers in private and public secondary schools. There were however significant differences the level of response to monetary incentives and also in the work environment of the biology teachers in private and public secondary schools. The study recommended that the government should look into the welfare and the job condition of biology teachers and the efforts of the teachers should be highly appreciated by the school principals.
