Teachers' perceptions of high self-esteem students and their academic achievement in the Central Region of Ghana

Abstract

The study sought to gain an understanding into teachers' perception of students' high self-esteem and theirĀ  academic achievement. Descriptive design was used for the study. The multi-stage sampling method was used
to select a total of 210 teachers from 10 junior and 10 senior high schools in the Central Region of Ghana for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data. The Cronbach's alpha of the questionnaire was 0.72. Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were used to analysed the data. The study showed that teachers had positive perception about students with high self-esteem and classroom participation. Teachers perceived students with high self-esteem to have positive attitudes towards their classmates. Teachers also perceived students with high self-esteem to have motivation for learning. It was recommended that teachers should engage learners in both curricular and co-curricular activities to enhance their self-esteem.
