Abstract

The study examined sources of knowledge of HIV/AIDS and contraceptive use among University of Maiduguri undergraduate students. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and Contraceptive Use Questionnaire (KHCUQ) was developed for the study. It was administered to 400 students using stratified random sampling technique based on gender, Department and Educational level. The study found that students have adequate knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Their sources of knowledge include television/radio, lecturers, dailies and magazines. Male and female students do not significantly differ in their knowledge of HIV/AIDS but significantly differ on use of contraceptives. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the Counselling Unit of the University provide reproductive counselling services to the students. Periodic orientation, workshops, seminars and symposium should be organized by Counselling Unit of the University to promote the use of modern contraceptives for healthy sexual behaviour among students.
