Pre-service teachers' use of instructional materials and perception on improvisations in teaching of mathematics and sciences

Abstract

The study examined the use and perception on improvisation of instructional materials in mathematics and sciences among pre-service teachers. The research adopted a descriptive design. The sample consisted of 265 Part III and Part IV pre-service mathematics and science teachers purposively selected. The Use of Instructional Materials and Perception on Improvisation Questionnaires were used to elicit information on the use of instructional material and perception on improvisation by the pre-service teachers. Findings revealed that preservice
teachers did not use the needed instructional materials in teaching.The most used instructional materials are slides and computer. Graph was mostly used for Basic Science and Agriculture Science. The findings also revealed that pre-service mathematics and science teachers had good perception towards improvisation. The study concluded that pre-service mathematics and science teachers did not use instructional materials during teaching as expected; therefore recommendations on appropriate means of using instructional materials in schools were suggested.
