Strategies for improving universal basic education implementation in Nigeria

Theresa Stephen Gyang

Abstract

The paper examined the implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Nigeria. While it asserted that UBE is a tool for providing basic education to its citizenry, many problems hindered its successful achievement. The paper advanced strategies that could be put in place for repositioning the implementation of UBE for improvement. Good governance is stressed as a major strategy through advocacy and awareness, capacity building of stakeholders, and community service delivery. Recommendations made include liaison meeting of government functionaries and community representatives to be reinforced to facilitate proper dialogue about the needs of schools at district level for onward execution of UBE programme. Another recommendation is capacity building through seminars, workshops and conferences by the government and community to educate stakeholders on the need to contribute for proper implementation of UBE programme. Good governance should be practiced through appropriate leadership to facilitate accountability, transparency and quality assurance of UBE implementation.
