Abstract

Cissampelos mucranata is a climbing shrub belonging to the family Menispermaceae, with wide spread use in traditional medicine practice. The anti-ulcerogenic effect was studied using animal models and compared with reference anti-ulcer drugs; atropine, carbenoxolone, cimetidine and prostaglandin E. Results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract of the root of C. mucranata decreased the ulcerative lesions index produced by ethanol (70%), acetylsalicylic acid, indomethacin and reserpine, nonspecifically. However, the extract was more effective as a cytoprotective agent against mucosal lesions than mere inhibition of gastrointestinal motility or atropine like action. We conclude that the prospects are quite high for anti-ulcerogenic (properties or usefulness) of hydroalcoholic extract of the root of Cissampelos mucranata .
