Abstract

Although uterine fibroids are very common, their pathogenesis and clinical features are poorly understood. Since the incidence of uterine fibroids peaks in the fifth decade of life and are more common in African and American women so the effect on haematological indices in adult women was investigated. About 21 blood samples were collected from the subjects; 6 samples from apparently healthy subjects and 15 from well established fibroids subjects. The samples were analysed for packed cell volume (PCV%), haemoglobin concentration (Hb) g/d/, white blood cell count (WBC)/mm3 platelet count 109/1; mean cell haemoglobin concentration red blood cell count and mean cell volume. Results showed that the presence of uterine fibroid has a reduction effect on the haematological profiles, which was manifested by a decrease in the level of haemoglobin concentration (Hb) g /dl from 13.0 ± 1.45 in the control subjects to 10.3 + 1.06 in the fibroids subjects (p<0.05), packed cell volume (%) from 38.5 ± 1.45 in the control subjects to 33.9 ± 3.18 in the fibroid subjects were not affected by the disease (p>0.05) but their mean cell haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count and mean cell volume were significantly reduced (p<0.05). the reduction by the presence or growth of fibroid in the female uterus. Hence its adverse effect can be checked by regular pelvic examination and reduction in the intake of oral contraceptives.
