Abstract

Effects of aging, type I diabetes mellitus (TIDM) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on tear production were studied in designated Government Hospital in Abia State of Nigeria. The results showed a mean baseline tear production of 26.2+2.8mm in Non-diabetic subjects, 23.2+2.8mm in TIDM patients and 22.1+2.2m in T2DM patients. Tear volume decreased with increased age. Statistical comparisons showed a significant decrease (P <0.01) in tear production in the diabetic patients generally and much more decrease in T2DM patients. Comparisons made between the tear productions in TIDM and T2MD patients showed a statistical significant different (P<01). Dry eyes are associated with aging and affect more of type II diabetic patients.
