Application software packages for library operations and services in federal university libraries, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines the type of Application packages for library operations and services in Federal University Libraries in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to determine the type of application software available for library services and operations in federal university libraries in north western states of Nigeria. Survey method was adopted for the study. The research instrument used for data collection is questionnaire. 266 Librarians constitute the total population. Purposive sampling was used to select 218 subjects from five Federal Universities where Library Automation have begun. Analysis and discussions were made. Findings revealed that all Universities studied are making use of KOHA, Virtua, E-LIB and Dspace and Greenstone to manage their digital Information resources. Based on these findings several recommendation were made such as the need to Incorporate Inter-Library loan, Serial management software, reference management software and Digital management software into the package.
