Advocacy For Rice-Fish Farming In Nigeria

Stephen N Ochang

Abstract

Rice-Fish farming, a system of production in which fish is grown alongside rice, is a relatively novel idea in Nigeria. Given the awareness that fish farming is gaining in the country and its consequent adoption by an increasingly large number of farmers, the value of integrating fish into rice production is unequivocal. But a large number of people are either completely ignorant of rice-fish farming as a production system or where they are aware of its existence, they do not know the methodology of how to go about it. This paper presents information on rice- fish culture as a production system, the different methods of practicing it and the advantages that attend the adoption of this system of farming in ensuring food security in Nigeria.
