Hepatoprotective effect of Aqueous stem bark extract OF <i>Boswellia Dalzielii</i> against CCL4 induced Hepatotoxicity

Abstract

The dearth of remedies that have antioxidant properties that protect the liver and drugs that induce hepatotoxicity has prompted and accelerated research into plants used in folk medicines to treat liver diseases. This study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective/hepatocurative effect of the aqueous stem bark extract of Boswellia dalzielii against CCl₄ induced hepatic damage in rats. The extract significantly reduced the AST, ALT, ALP, bilirubin and lipid peroxide levels which were elevated as a result of CCl₄ administration. The reduced levels of antioxidants like glutathione and vitamins in CCl₄ treated animals were significantly increased in extract treated animals. The result of the study showed that the extract can protect the integrity of the liver against toxins.
