Stress and quality of life among healthcare workers in Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin City,

Abstract

Healthcare workers experience high levels of stress when demands to meet up with life activities and commitments exceedtheir abilities to cope and this has a negative impact on their quality of life and work performance hence, the objective of this study is to assess and compare the stress and quality of life of different health care workers. A cross sectional study with stratified sampling method was employed in collecting samples of different healthcare workers in Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin City, using a self-administered structured questionnaire consisting of items from demographic data, International Stress Management Association (ISMA) assessment tool and a Short Form 12 itemversion 2 (SF-12vs2)quality of life assessment questionnaire. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SPSS 22 was used to determine significance difference of stress level, and quality of life among the different health workers. Variations among different health care workers’ distribution of stress level gave a p value of 0.0036 while the post hoc  analysis of the distribution where occupational therapists is the control group revealed a p value of < 0.05 for pharmacists / pharmacy  technicians and others (procurement officers, confidential secretaries, statisticians and data analysts). Changes among quality of life of different health care  workers gave a p value of 0.0568. Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and procurement officers arethemost stressed healthcare workers, while  quality of life is low and similar for all healthcare workers.
