Abstract

The role of telecommunications in disaster reduction is critical in order to improve the timely flow of crucial information needed for appropriate assistance to be delivered before, during and after the disaster. The breakdown of essential communications is one of the most widely shared characteristics of all disasters. The collapse of communications infrastructure, due to the collapse of antennas, buildings, power etc is the usual effect of disaster. This paper describes a communication network that is appropriate, suitable and reliable in any disaster: - Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET). A mobile ad hoc network is formed dynamically by an autonomous system of mobile nodes that are connected via wireless links without using the existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. The ease of deployment and infrastructure less nature of the network are some of reasons why MANET is recommended in disaster area.
