Gender Differential Perception Of Factors Influencing Choice Of Profession Among Academic Staff Of Colleges Of Education In Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract



The choice of profession among individuals especially academicians is as important as the particular profession. This is because if the wrong choice is made productivity in the world of work may be affected drastically. Male academicians on the one hand and females on the other have different reasons for choosing their professions. This study examines the
perception of male and female academicians with a view to determining whether or not
differences exist. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire from 360
randomly selected male and female academicians from the Federal College of Education
(Technical), Omoku and Rivers State College of Education, Rumuolumeni. Data analysis was
by the use of arithmetic mean. Findings of the study revealed that there was no significant
difference in the perception of males and females about choice of profession in the colleges of education under study. However, findings of the study reveals that prestigious nature of the profession (t=2.15, P<0.05), Enough time for other things (t=3.77, P<0.05), (t=6.74,
P<0.05), frequent transfer (t=3.63, P<0.05), other means of making money (t=3.12, P<0.05)
were the factors that significantly influence choice of profession among respondents.
