Abstract

The influence of the bark powder of the root of Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides. Lam.on the evolution of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) dammages in cowpea storages was studied in laboratory. The
experimental laboratory conditions of temperature and relative humidity were respectively 28 ± 2 °C et 75 ± 10 %, and a photoperiod of 12 L / 12 D. The analysis of the evolution of the dammages in experimental
stocks of 2 kg of cowpea grains treated with 2 and 8 grams of bark powder (say 0.1 and 0.4 % w to w) on 3 generations indicated that the powder could induce a reduction of dammages in the stocks. At the
emergence of the adults of the first stock generation, there was not any significant difference between the contols and the treatments. The statistical significant reduction was obtained in the treatment with 8
grams of powder at the emergence of the second generation of adults in the storages. The results showed that the bark powder does not affect the developmental stages of C. maculatus inside the grains.
The efficiency of the treatment, determined by the weevil perforation index (WPI) showed that application of 8 grams of bark powder induced an index smaller than 50%. The dose of 8 grams of powder could be regarded as an efficient dose. This observation is corroborated by the small proportion (0.72 ± 0.2 %) of grains with at least 3 holes through which adults emerged per grain. Some suggestions to improve the impact of the powder on the cowpea weevil are made.
