Etude des anomalies électrocardiographiques chez le sportif togolais

Abstract

Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the different kind of electrocardiographic abnormalities encountered with Togolese sportsmen.
Material and methods: It was a prospective and analytic study carried out in Lome (Togo) from 10th March to 10th October 2009. The National Federation of handball and cyclism offices located inside the National Omnisports stadium of Lome, the meeting room of the National Football League of Lome and the Togolese National Olympic Committee offices were our study’s ward.
Results: The targeted population was 236 sportsmen of 41 females (17%) and 195 males (83%). The mean age of the sportsmen was 25.7 + 5.4 years old with a bracket ranged from 15 to 58 years. The sharing out of sportsmen according to their discipline showed that football teams represented 59.7% of the sample. Different electrocardiographic abnormalities were found: anomalies ECG. The rhythm was sinusal and regular with 228 sportsmen (96.6%) and irregular with 8 sportsmen (3.4%). The auriculo-ventricular interval was normal with 227 sportsmen (96.2%). Right auricular hypertrophy was observed with 4 sportsmen (1.7%). Left auricular hypertrophy was observed with 4 sportsmen (1.7%). The prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy was 22% within handball team and 8.5% within football team. Others abnormalities were registered: 3 incomplete right bundle branch block, 3 incomplete left bundle branch block and 1 QRS micro-voltage. This study has diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic interests. It had helped making recommendations to authorities in order to promote medical and cardiologic care to Togolese sportsmen.
